# Start with the purpose of the report

Lesson 1 of [Compare ADHD evaluation providers](https://adhdevaluations.fyi/academy/compare-adhd-evaluation-providers.md), 13 minutes.

Before you compare providers, write down why you want an evaluation and who will read the report. A school, an employer, a college office, a prescriber or your own family may each want something different.

## Provider types differ

The site's attributes list five provider types: clinical neuropsychologist, psychologist, psychiatrist, physician assistant and nurse practitioner. The site's guides say the content of an evaluation can differ by type. Providers also differ within a type, so ask each one what their evaluation includes.

## Ask about the report's use

If an institution will read the report, ask the provider whether their reports serve that use. Then ask the institution what documentation it accepts. Do this before you pay.

## Ask about your age group

The guides say the process differs for children, teens and adults. Ask how many of the provider's evaluations are for your age group. Ask whether they assess adults who were never evaluated as children, if that applies to you.

## A title is not a process

A provider type on a listing does not tell you what the evaluation includes. Ask each provider to describe it.
