# Check the official register

Lesson 1 of [Verify an ADHD evaluator and read the paperwork](https://adhdevaluations.fyi/academy/verify-an-adhd-evaluator-and-paperwork.md), 18 minutes.

A listing helps you find a provider. It does not confirm a licence. The site's FAQ tells you to ask the provider, and to check the licensing board in the state of the practice address.

## Collect the details

From the listing, write down the provider's full name, profession, practice state and credentials. The listing may also show the National Provider Identifier (NPI). The NPI identifies the provider in the registry. It is not a licence.

## Find the right register

The licensing body depends on the profession and the state. Search for the official register for that profession in the state where the provider practices. Use the body's own site. If you are not sure which body applies, ask the provider which body regulates them.

## Match and read

- Does the name match the listing?
- Are the state and the profession the same?
- What status does the register show?
- Does it show any restriction or note? Registers differ in what they show, so read what is there.

## If something does not match

A name can differ because of a married name, a spelling or a move. Do not assume a problem. Ask the provider, and ask the register's office if the entry is unclear.

## Board certification

If a provider says they hold a board certification, ask which body awards it. Then check with that body. A listing does not confirm it.
